The Process
Mastering the fundamentals—such as composition, texture, shading, and line depth—is essential and can be applied across any innovative software. When you train your eye and dedicate time to learning classic techniques, those skills become transferable. Understanding the basics of design is the first step toward developing a discerning and powerful eye.
Life drawing is an excellent practice for both new students learning to observe and seasoned professionals looking to challenge themselves after long hours at the computer. Below are a few of my drawings, where I rediscovered these foundational skills. There’s a unique excitement that comes from putting pencil to paper; it’s magical to capture what we see in front of us and recreate it by hand.
My passion for hand drawing anytime and anywhere inspires me to create storyboards. I always carry a notebook and pen or pencil to capture inspirations and visually sketch ideas. I then take these concepts into software for further refinement. Creating thumbnails is an essential part of my process; I sketch my storyboard ideas in boxes for logos, flyers, and packaging—everything I design. I view software as a tool that helps bring these ideas to life.
